Oftentimes the study for a work of art reveals more of the feeling and artist’s intention than the final product. That is because this is where ideas are worked out–and transformed into forms and figures. Although he is only trying to reach his home, the kneeling man is faced with many obstacles. Along the right-hand margin of the study are sketches of the scales of justice. And they are tipped in a manner suggesting that equality is subjective.
