Celebrating Community

The Water’s Edge Museum is approaching its 5th anniversary! Join us as we recognize our achievements of the past year, celebrate Black History Month with the opening of two brand new exhibits, illuminate untold histories, and introduce new friends!

EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FEBRUARY 21ST!

As a result of the cold weather, The Water’s Edge is experiencing unforeseen maintenance issues. We are working diligently to resolve the issue as quickly as possible; however, the museum will need to be closed for the remainder of the week for repairs. We understand that this is an incredibly unfortunate scenario, as many individuals have already RSVP’d for the event and made arrangements to spend their day in celebration with us. We do hope that you might be able to join us on our new date of February 21st. Please use the form to RSVP or send an email directly to watersedgemuseum@gmail.com

We apologize for the inconvenience.

We’re Excited to Announce our Black History Month Celebration & the Museum’s 5th Anniversary:

GUARDIANS OF THE COAST

On February 7th, we invite you to join us as we continue our mission of celebrating the founding Black families of America, empowering youth to find their place in history, and inspiring all generations to identify their own positive and unique voices when facing contemporary issues and challenges. As The Water’s Edge seeks to address what it means to adequately safeguard the peoples, places, and cultures of the Chesapeake and beyond, we open the museum to you as a space for reflection and discovery.

Above all, our team aims to celebrate and strengthen community. This past year, we were fortunate enough to stumble across a powerful story of Black maritime history beyond the Chesapeake Bay, one that’s so important to share. We open our space to a special guest speaker, Joan Collins, as she shares how Keeper Richard Etheridge and the all-Black crew of the Pea Island Lifesaving Station risked their lives in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” pulling shipwrecked sailors from violent seas. In partnership with the Pea Island Preservation Society, we are happy to announce the opening of a mini exhibit highlighting these Guardians of the Coast.
We’ll also be honoring 400 years of maritime service from one Black family, a legacy of courage, skill, and survival on the water.

We hope that you will take the time to join us for a full day of festivities - food, choir, singing, spirituals, activities, museum tours, and a special guest speaker: Joan Collins
Please use the form above to RSVP for the event. If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to contact us via email (watersedgemuseum@gmail.com).

If you are unable to attend, we are always happy to host during our usual hours listed below. We are also happy to schedule tours outside of normal hours by request! The Guardians of the Coast exhibit, and our new and improved Environmental Justice as a Civil Right gallery will be on display for the foreseeable future.
